The School Leavers’ Toolkit (Toolkit) is a Government initiative designed to help schools provide opportunities for their students to become financially capable, learn about civics and how government works and develop key workplace competencies.
The objectives of the Toolkit, are already embedded in the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (TMoA) and there is a wide range of content available to support teaching on the three focus areas. However, we’ve heard that schools need more support to access the programmes and resources and integrate them into their local curriculum.
School and kura community contexts vary greatly. That’s why the School Leavers’ Toolkit is not a ‘one size fits all’ set of resources. Instead, the Toolkit will encourage schools to put together their own collection of learning experiences that meet the needs and aspirations of their students. Schools may decide to include additional knowledge and skills alongside financial literacy, civics and workplace competencies.
This flexible approach reflects feedback and insights from sector leaders, teachers and kaiako along with evidence about the factors that strongly influence student learning.
Throughout 2019 we’ll be working with schools and kura to find out more about what it takes to integrate financial literacy, key workplace competencies and civics education into local curriculum. We’ll be identifying the tools, resources and guidelines schools and kura need to design and implement their own School Leavers’ Toolkit, and sharing examples of schools who are already doing this.
In response to feedback from students, we’ll also be developing a School Leavers’ Toolkit website for young people, featuring key information and links to trusted resources. This website will be available from mid-2019.
